Soumik Majumdar, a 33-year-old man from Kolkata who was receiving treatment for depression and other mental health conditions, was taken into custody on Friday morning on suspicion of murdering his mother. He admitted to the police that he had stabbed her, stayed with the corpse overnight, and then told others the next day. Residents at Vedic Village’s Greentech City, where he and his mother shared an apartment, are in disbelief over the horrific act.
The accused, Soumik Majumdar, is suspected of killing his mother, Debjani Majumdar, 58, by stabbing her to death on Thursday night after a furious fight. After spending the night with his mother’s corpse, the accused went up to the tea seller on Friday morning and said, “I killed my mother.” All night long, I haven’t eaten. Is there any food available?
The tea merchant was taken aback by the odd query and saw that Soumik was perplexed; his hands were quivering, his lips were muttering, and his eyes were expressionless. As soon as he summoned the security officers, they smashed down the door of the apartment and discovered a startling sight.
The floor was covered with bloodstains, and the victim’s neck and shoulder were stabbed many times. Investigators discovered a heavily bloodied chair, evidence of fighting, and a significant cut on the back of her skull, indicating that she had been flung roughly to the ground during the assault.
The police said the crime happened on Thursday between 11 p.m. and midnight. By putting the weapon next to his mother and tending to his own wounds, Soumik reportedly attempted to make it seem as if he had committed suicide. He returned to the tea shop the next morning and admitted to the crime, although he later denied it after being arrested.
Santoshpur was the original home of the Majumdar family. Following the passing of Soumik’s father, Soumendra Majumder, in 2021, they relocated to the Vedic Village flat. His father had purchased the apartment. Soumik and his mother have been living there ever since. He was employed at a BPO until he lost his job around a year ago, according to police sources. He apparently struggled with depression after it.
According to Abdul Rashid, a complex resident, Soumik would walk about begging for food and cash. They have been unable to pay their maintenance fees and power bills in recent months.
Previous evasive remarks such as “I’ve killed my mother” were disclosed by tea dealer Rabin Biswas. Most people ignored what he said since his mother was subsequently seen alive. But this time, the assertion turned out to be accurate. According to a senior officer, “no neighbours were in the area to hear or report any noise during the incident.” “After the assault started, the victim probably attempted to flee but was overcome. The assault seems to have been carried out when she was in a condition of severe emotional anguish, and she sustained several wounds.
The cause of the murder is being looked into by the police. They are investigating every possibility, even though financial difficulties and mental health disorders are suspected. After being brought before a district court, Soumik was placed under judicial detention.
